Why a museum or gallery is different
Museums, art galleries and exhibition centres are Utilização-Tipo X. Beyond visitor safety, there's the collection to think about: works that can't be damaged by extinguishing water or by smoke, and stores with concentrated fire load.
The visit usually follows routes defined by rooms and temporary partitions, which calls for extra attention to evacuation routes every time the exhibition changes.
When this usually becomes urgent
- Opening a new museum, gallery or exhibition centre
- Setting up in a historic building, with limits on altering the structure
- Mounting a temporary exhibition that changes the routes and the expected occupancy
- Creating or expanding stores and art depots
- A failed inspection that flagged exits blocked by cases or partitions, or missing detection in the stores
What usually gets assessed
Sensitive automatic detection, including in stores and depots. Extinguishing systems chosen partly to protect the collection, which in sensitive areas can mean gaseous-agent systems rather than water. Emergency lighting and exit signage that stay valid with each new exhibition layout. Evacuation routes clear of cases and partitions. Frequently asked questions
Does a small gallery need a MAP?
It depends on the area and the occupancy. Small 1st-category galleries have minimal obligations; from the 2nd category a MAP is required. Being in a historic building or holding significant stores can influence the assessment.
I don't want water sprinklers over the works. Is there an alternative?
In areas with a sensitive collection, the MAP can specify gaseous-agent or water-mist systems, precisely to avoid damage. The solution is set by the técnico autor based on the value and vulnerability of the pieces.
I change exhibitions several times a year. Do I have to revise the MAP each time?
The base MAP stays, but each layout has to respect the evacuation routes, exits and occupancy it defines. It's worth validating each room plan with the safety officer before opening to the public.
